INVISIBILE PUBBLICO
Site-specific augmented reality installation, Milan, 2024
A curtain, conceived as a threshold between reality and fiction, opens onto a suburban neighborhood of Milan, in a space situated between the cinema and the street. The path to the theater passes through a degraded underpass occupied by homeless people. Here, a fracture emerges: on one side, the protected, recreational, and fictional world of cinema; on the other, the concrete and marginal reality of the surrounding urban space, often rendered invisible. The project focuses on this tension, bringing attention to a social dimension that is systematically overlooked.
The research takes shape through posters floating in front of the curtain, revealing fragments of this hidden reality. The images, generated through artificial intelligence, incorporate texts from online news reports about Milan’s housing crisis—from unused public housing to increasingly unaffordable rents—creating a fragmented and non-linear narrative.
The work is accessible via a geolocated QR code, active exclusively within the selected area, making the experience inseparable from the specific physical and social context in which the project is situated.
Alt_Ra https://altraproject.xyz/ , conceived by artist and curator Gabriele Barbagallo, seeks to rethink the concept of art exhibitions by exploring new display approaches and questioning the nature of invisible artworks. The project experiments with whether an augmented reality artwork, though not physically visible, can truly exist. Alt_Ra is also a collaborative experience, where participants move beyond artistic individualism to create a shared vision. The work can be accessed in augmented reality via a QR code, with no time limits.
